Abstract

Assam's per-capita income has consistently lagged behind that of the national average since the 1960s. Economic growth in the State lagged far behind that of the Indian economy but has shown signs of catching-up since the early 2000s. The agricultural sector's share has consistently diminished over time to below 20 percent of the total State gross-domestic-product (SGDP). The GSDP growth has no link with the performance of agricultural development over the most recent years. This paper aims to examine how non-farm employment growth has affected the urban consumption patterns during the post-liberalization period in Assam.
