Abstract

INTRODUCTION: In this article, we review the origin of natural dyes, plants and animals yielding dyes, chemical nature of these dyes, their advantages with limitation, technology involved with natural dyes production and present status of these dyes. Today’s context, natural dyes are seen as complimentary and not conflicting with the use of synthetic dyes in the textile industry as a whole. In the domestic and export markets, natural dye products are valued more for their novelty and beauty. They are supposed to have a multifold use, besides contributing to the effectiveness of measures to preserve the environment. Among few draw backs of natural dyes low colorfastness property is one.
