Abstract

Trade behaviour is not completely determined by trade policy; but policy prescription is a major weapon to influence volume, composition, direction and determinants of trade. Exports from India to ASEAN appear to have the most impressive growth compared to any other region. This increase in trade with the ASEAN is an anomaly given the declining trend in India’s trade with other major trading partners. The India-ASEAN FTA is considered as a vital development in promoting trade and export-led growth in the region. Due to the impact of the recession on the US, Japan and the EU, exports from countries such China, India and ASEAN to these regions have fallen sharply. This should be an opportune time for India and other countries to move ahead with the purpose of harnessing other regional countries for enhanced trade and economic relations through promoting cooperation in the region.
