Abstract

Abstract: In 1990s, policy of liberalization was embarked in India and licenses to a small number of private sector banks were given, which came to be known as New Generation tech-savvy banks. After which the banking sector has seen a rapid growth with strong contribution from all three sectors of banks, namely, public banks, private banks and foreign banks. The problems which the Indian banks face are the high level of Non Performing Assets (NPA). The increasing level of NPAs negatively impacts the profitability and efficiency of the banks. This paper analyses various measures useful in bringing down the NPAs of banks. It studies the steps taken by RBI and to what extent they have been useful in recovery of NPAs of banks, especially public sector banks (PSBs).
