Abstract

Food nourishes our body and has a vital role to play in shaping up our thoughts. Jainism is not just a religion but a way of life which influences every aspect of living of the follower. Principles of food including water as defined in Jainism are intrinsically connected with the driving force- Ahimsa i.e nonviolence. Tatvartha Sutra related to Karma theory streams from our past life, our wellbeing in the current birth and influences future births. Responsibility of an individual extends to the health of other forms of life including the environment and the process through which food has been grown, procured, processed, cooked and stored. The ingredients, time of cooking, process of cooking and even the thoughts of the cook determines nourishment factor of a meal. There are rules defining time of cooking and eating. Sedentary lifestyle and distance from our source of food in the modern world has put forth challenges that require followers of Jainism to relook at the knowledge on food and health benefits provided in the teachings of Tirthankaras. Compassionate food choices that embrace wellbeing of all living creatures and nourishes our own soul which truly reflects Shramana culture needs exploration.
