Jhumpa Lahiri is one of the most acclaimed diasporic writers writing about the dilemma of India-American immigrants. She very beautifully portrays the predicaments of first and second generation Indian-immigrants in the U.S. In her famous novel, The Namesake, which has also been celluloid on screen, Lahiri, very artistically delineates the burden of alienation and rootlessness. Identity, being an essential feature of one's personality, can never be compromised and the vacuum created in the absence of the same does never let one live peacefully with a sense of comfort. The novel explores the idea of isolation and identity, not only individual but cultural also. When cultural and ethnic identities get blurred in a multicultural and multiethnic space like America, the individual identity also stands vulnerable to change. Gogol Ganguly, the second generation Indian-American, encounters this crisis of identity frequently. Being born in America, he is an American national but the Indian cultural baggage at home and his mysterious name do not let him become a fully Americanised personality. Oscillating like a pendulum between the two, he is unable to belong fully to the American society. He Keeps on trying to reconcile his American identity with Indian identity.
