Abstract

India is a country with cultural diversity and multilayered economic backgrounds with poverty and inequalities as its factual features. After independence, initially the main aim of Indian policy makers was the reduction in poverty with implementation of development programmes despite the existence of income inequalities. But from mid-eighties, the stress was laid on the reduction of inequalities as well with encouragement to state intervention for equitable distribution with the adoption of liberal reforms and privatization. These economic reforms have brought about a remarkable economic growth but has lead to increment in the inequality of economic condition and the economic opportunities.
