This article is a study of physical development of Colonial Bankura, a district though formed in 1884 , became an important administrative centre since 1805-06.The district was in Jangal Mahals of south Bengal, was highly disturbed with rebellious nature of its people. The British government made Bankura, a less known hamlet a cantonment and centre of British Administration owing to its location and its easy communication with Orissa and North Indian Provinces through road. The article deals especially with the efforts taken by then colonial government for the advancement of road communication of the district. Though the colonial government paid less attention for the development of road communication in hinterlands of the district, the roads for connecting one province to other provinces were constructed for their own benefits either economic or military.
