Feminist use patriarchy as a concept to analyse how and why women are oppressed. Juliet Michell uses the word ‘patriarchy’ to refer to kinship system in which men exchange women and to the symbolic power that father exercises within this system. She says further that this power is responsible for the ‘interiorized’ psychology of woman. She describes patriarchy as ideology (Beechey, 1979: 72).
