Historic areas display advanced townscape qualities that have evolved over a long period and exemplify ecologically sustainable urban model. India has attempted an improved system of sustainable planning of cities through smart city initiative. This paper investigates how the historical and cultural heritage of cities is and can be underpinned by means of smart city tools and applications. Further sharing our past in smart city initiative has the potential to promote urban tourism in a sustainable way. A main focus of this paper is on smart city Jaipur. We conclude that although potential applications and approaches abound, cultural heritage stands for a mostly unexploited asset, presenting multiple opportunities within smart city context.
