Abstract

The article deals with the interrelationships between formal educations as a part of total system and social stratification as an unavoidable feature of any society expressed through the notion of caste, class, gender, and rural-urban difference, and mobility as a dynamic aspect of individual and societal aspirations in both Western and Indian societies. The article finds that the relationships between education, stratification and mobility varies in Indian societies and Western societies and opines that education is not the only and most important means of mobility and dependent upon other factors such as quality of education itself and the opening opportunities in the respective areas surrounded by the walls of stratification and institutional structures.
