Abstract

India aims at faster, inclusive, and sustainable growth. Wages can be used as an indicator of inclusive growth and social justice. A decent wage policy can be helpful in achieving these objectives – providing financial stability, spanning the choice set of consumers, especially to the middle class, raising the aggregate demand. The minimum wage act, 1947 of India, is one of the important pieces of legislation in this field. However, it does not cover all workers and suffers from full of complexities and a lack of well-defined methodology. The paper, therefore, provides an outline of the development of Indian wage policy; specifically, it discusses the evolution of the minimum wage act of India and its methodology and explores the possible way forward to minimum wages for more inclusive and sustainable growth.
