Abstract

Anxiety is a complex emotional state characterized by general fear or foreboding usually accompanied by tension which arises from faulty adaptations to the stresses and strains of life and caused by over-reaction in an attempt to meet these difficulties. There is a dearth of research exploring the factors that impact the development and performance of sports officials, however; few consider psychological factors are of more importance to examine the behavior of sports officials during competition. In particular, stress has been on the importance of understanding sport officiating behavior with reference to ANXIETY. Thus, the aim of the present study was to compare the level of anxiety among Umpires/Referees of team games and individual games. The present investigation was conducted on a total of 60 Umpires/Referees belonging to team games and individual games (30 from each continuum respectively) who have been officiating at National level from past 5 years and also at International level. For the purpose of the study, the modified “Test Anxiety Questionnaire”, originally developed by Nist and Diehl (1990), was employed to evaluate
