PRINTMAKING DEVELOPED IN FIFTEENTH CENTURY FOR RELIGIOUS PURPOSES

Abstract

Introduction In the 15th Century, Printmaking was usually used for religious purposes. The practice started from Germany and then moved to the rest of the world. In Europe most of the practicing artists of the time, considered Printmaking a serious medium. Artists like Albrecht Durer, Leonardo da Vinci have worked in Engraving. Later in the 17th century Rembrandt, W. Daumier, Francisco de Goya worked in the medium of Etching. The reason for this is that modern Printmaking first started in Europe. Between the 15th century and the 3rd decade of the 20th century, we find the artists who implemented Printmaking techniques in their art. Among these the names of Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt, Goya, Daumier, Paul Gauguin and Picasso are to be mentioned. Through Goya’s Aquatints, Daumier’s Lithographs, Paul Gauguin’s Woodcuts, and Picasso’s Etchings, new possibilities opened up in the world of Graphic arts.
