Time span taken by Kamala Markandaya for that historic novel is between 1850 to 1947. Britishers were trying to take Princely states of India in their grip either by hook or crook. Condition of princely states was much miserable. At that time three fifth of India was directly under the British administration, while two-fifths comprised these princely states ruled by autocratic Indian princes who were bound with Britishers in various types of treaty relationships, ranging from subordinate alliance to vassalage. The Governor-General was the overall in charge for princely states in India, we can say in other words he was a representative of her majesty queen Victoria.
