Abstract

One of the epicentres of Dalit enlightenment on the Indian subcontinent is the Telangana region of Hyderabad State; long before India's Independence and the country's union, Dalits united there with a progressive, reformist purpose. The independent Dalit movement continued until communist parties began to operate in the area; Jagan Mithramandali (1906) is regarded as the initial focal place for formerly untouchables.
