A SILENCE THAT SPEAKS: NARRATIVE DISPOSSESSION IN MAHESH DATTANI’S TARA

Abstract

Tara, written by Mahesh Dattani, is typically seen as a play about the preference for a son. This paper argues that the ‘silence’ of the title should not be read literally, since Tara is not a silent character but a highly verbal one, outwitting her brother and even her parents while remaining honest with herself.
