A nation’s identity is reflected alongside the development of its literature. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, during the period of Colonization and Revolution, American literature was inspired by the broader tradition of English literature. However in the early nineteenth century, the period of first American Renaissance, unique American characteristics found their way in American literature and henceforth American literature took a separate path and formed a new tradition which marked the real beginning of American literature. The present paper analyzes this diversity and uniqueness in the matters of theme and form that became an essential principle for the development of American fiction.
