Abstract

Assam is the land of a number of ethnic groups each having a distinctive identity of its own. But remarkably this ethnic diversity has hardly impeded culture in the state. With the diversity in their customs and traditions these groups have lived side by side for ages, shared a common history and evolved in the process of culture that may aptly be called ‘Assamese Culture’ (Gogoi, 1982). Assamese culture has a glorious tradition in textile and handloom weaving. Handloom weaving is the most important cottage industry and an ancient craft of Assam which gives insight into the way of life of the people. Assamese weavers produce varieties of clothes with fineness of texture and colourful designs.
