As opposed to most American writers who worship nature, novelist-philosopher Ayn Rand’s conviction is that human beings do not live in a Garden of Eden. Survival demands that human intervention in nature is inevitable, it is impossible to prevent man from shaping the earth in the image of his values. Since human beings survive by reshaping nature to fulfill their needs, every step taken beyond the cave constitutes an improvement in human life. Ayn Rand’s philosophy propagates that environmentalism does not mean a hatred of science and technology, or rejection of progress in human life. In fact, to work only for bare necessities, so that nature remains pristine, is a luxury that human beings cannot afford. This paper is an eco-critical reading of Rand’s fictional works and attempts to explore how her protagonists strike a balance between the needs of man and the environment.
