Abstract

The state of Uttar Pradesh is largest state of the country. Diarrhoea is leading cause of death of children below 5 years of age. The aim of the current piece of work was to isolate bacteria from the stool samples of paediatric diarrhoea patients. A total of 20 patients of 2 months to 48 months were screened for the symptoms of disease and sampling was performed. Microbiologically and Biochemically nine isolates were identified as Escherichia coli, while other isolates included Gram positive cocci and rods. Fourteen antibiotics of different groups including cephalosporins I, II and III generation, fluoroquinolones, quinolones, synthetic quinolones, aminoglycosides and nitrofurantoin were used for the assay. All the isolates were resistant to nitrofurantoin and gentamycin, while all were sensitive to amikacin. Cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones were effective variedly against the isolates. Development of resistance to commonly used antibiotics viz., cephalosporins, fluoroquinolones is cause of conern.
