FOOD IN DHARMSASTRAS

Abstract

THE WORD Dharma means ‘Eternal Law’. ‘Dharman’ which is the older form of dharma in Vedic literature, is described as the fundamentals of religion, an ideal form of conduct that was accepted as the foundation of right living by religious orders in ancient India. Hindu dharma has put emphasis on all folded development of individual i.e. physical, psychological, intellectual and spiritual. ‘Food is the ultimate’, is the Vedic thought and it has been given a great importance in the overall development of an individual. Detailed regulations and prohibitions were made for food. The present article is an attempt to compile some of these codes of conduct pertaining to food.
