Abstract

Flavonoids are wide group of phytonutrients which are found in all vegetables and fruits in less or large quantity. Flavonoids are basically polyphenolic compounds which attributeantioxidant properties. Kaempferol is an important member of flavonoids family. It is a common ingredient in verity of fruits like apples, grapes, strawberries and vegetables like beans, broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, onion, tomatoes etc.kaempferol is also found in tea.According to recent studies Kaempferol has potent health benefits due to its scavenging capacity. It can scavenge various highly reactive free radical species which are generated during various metabolic activities in the body. Studies also claimed that it has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Kaempferol is also reported as anti-microbial, anti-viral and has neuro protective effects.Kaempferol is also useful in prevention of arteriosclerosis by preventing the oxidation of low density lipoprotein and also helps in the formation of blood platelets in the body.Studies also indicate its cardio protective, neuroprotective, antidiabetic, anticancer,estrogenic/antiestrogenic,anti-osteoporotic, anxiolytic, analgesic and antiallergic. The aim of this review is to collect information concerning the scientific evidences for its various health benefits and to find out possible mechanism of its potent antioxidant activity and insight toxicological aspects. This review emphasize on review the studies so far in order to elucidate the possible beneficial health effects of kaempferol and to understand the possible mechanism involved in its antioxidant activity.
