EFFECTIVENESS OF FOREIGN AID IN AFGHANISTAN (2001-2014)

Abstract

Afghanistan started receiving foreign aid since the Soviet period in the 60s. During this stage, the Soviet government helped the communist regime in Afghanistan. On the other hand, America supported the mujahideen forces to dethrone the communist regime. Once the Soviet government left the country in 1989, the USA government stopped showing a kind of interest in the country. During the Taliban regime in the first half of 90s relation between Afghanistan and the world deteriorated. After the attack on the World Trade Centre in the USA, the US government decided to attack Afghanistan to dismantle the Taliban and its allies. Initially, they had a huge success on the Afghan soil. After the initial success, the international community felt the need to rebuild the war-torn country so that the radical forces would not rise again. In 2001, for the first time, all the major international powersgathered in Bonn, Germanyto pledge aid for the Afghan reconstruction programme.
