Abstract

Mahatma Gandhi was the prominent personality of modern Indian History. Many historians wrote on Gandhi and his philosophy, have observed that the Gandhian movement influenced the whole section of Indian society directly or indirectly. The only issue picked up therein is the engagement of Gandhi in the peasant struggle of Awadh. Most of literature raised the different aspects of Gandhi’s contribution in the India’s peasant struggle with preponderance. However, a few historiographers have paid attention to Gandhi’s role in the Awadh peasant struggle as the peasant of Awadh was not in the monolithic group. Their condition was differed from one district to other were divided because of the various category like religion, caste and income. Therefore, the peasant’s awareness varied and their relationship with the Gandhi was diversified and complex. Some question is still unanswered about the relationship of Gandhi and peasants in Awadh. The main theme of this research paper is related to find out the role of Awadh peasant in programme of Gandhi and peasants’ attitude towards the Gandhi. This paper also tries to explore the origin and nature of Awadh peasant movement at local level. The whole study was divided into the four phases and each phase is related to problem of peasants, nature of leadership at local and national level, role of Gandhi in the peasant’s agitations in Awadh and relation of Gandhi with the local leaders of Awadh.
