Abstract

Domestic violence is a system or pattern of behaviour which involves the abuse by one partner against another in an intimate relationship such as marriage, cohabitation, dating or within the family. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary the definition of domestic violence is “the inflicting of physical injury by one family or household member on another; also a repeated or habitual pattern of such behavior” (638). Domestic violence “can happen to anyone without taking his or her race, age, sexual orientation, religion or gender,” and can take many forms like- physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional, economic and psychological abuse. Along with all these forms of violence, community violence can also be defined, a violence that is done by a group or a community towards another group or community.
