Abstract

The status of the Brahmanas, especially the intellectuals, continued to be regarded as the highest among the four varnas who stood at the head of the social organization and were devoted to learn and self discipline. The continuous decline in Brahmanas economic condition during early medieval period affected his social status. The adoption of lower occupation pushed such Brahmanas into lower status and behavior. On geographical basis and on the basis of occupations and the standard of conduct they were classified into many groups and titles by the than law-givewrs during the period, which are also common today in the present society.
