Abstract

Highways are a nation’s backbone. They handle huge amount of passengers and freight and thus are expected to be safe, robust, economical and eco-friendly. But this is not the case in most of the world today. Highways are extremely dangerous, insanely slow and unreliable. This paper looks into the details of this case. It talks about what ideal expectations should be held from highways of the future, the relevant technologies that we have currently and how we can use a combination of these technologies to make systems that can be implemented to create truly smart highways of the future. In the end this paper also discusses about some countries which have already implemented some form of smart highways.
