Abstract

If we look at the history of English in the country, English language gained entry in India with the entry of East India Company. Christian schools (through their missionaries) started functioning in the early 1800s. Macaulay’s Minutes of Indian Education advocated the use of English as it was felt that ‘Indians cannot be educated by means of their mother tongue. He also envisaged that English would be the language of commerce, politics and judiciary
