Abstract

The wide spread of pre and post harvest chemical pesticides in order to increase the yield of crops in Rishipur village of Malda District creates detrimental effects on vegetables, food grains and cultivators. A wide range of chemical pesticides are frequently used in the management of pests and diseases in vegetable production at Rishipur village of Malda District, West Bengal. The present study reveals that the farmers frequently use chemical pesticides of high to enormously hazardous group like Cypermethrin (C22H19Cl2NO3), Carbofuran (C12H15NO3), Endosulfan (C9H6Cl6O3S), Fluchloralin (C12H13ClF3N3O4), Organophosphates etc. Different symptoms of diseases as well as physiological disorders among the farmers have been reported. No proper protective measures were noticed to take on by the farmers. The sprayers were found to be related with higher relative risk in comparison with non-sprayers. Soil and nearby water quality were also observed to deteriorate. Thus the pesticides require the use of appropriate protective measures to protect the human health and the environment.
