Abstract

Stylistics functions as an umbrella term for a range of different stylistics approaches to study a text. Its meaning varies, based on the theory that is adopted. Some perceive it the study of varieties of language stylistics (Bradford 1997); others study of choice of individuals and social groups in their use of language (Turner 1973, Birch 1997). Mukherjee (2005) regards style as a choice of linguistic means; as deviation from a norm; as recurrence of linguistic forms; and as comparison. There are different approaches to the analysis of styles of texts or various ways/perspectives which account for the analysis of texts. Lawal(1997) in his own view identifies these factors as "approaches" while other name it "concepts".
