Abstract

In Maithili Literature it is not possible to identify the treatment of Buddhist themes by themselves to a certain extent. There can be found certain general similarities between Buddhist themes and non-Buddhist (labeled Hindu) themes as found in Maithili Literature. There are literature where Buddhist themes are directly discussed. The excellent work on the celebrated dhammapada by Prof. Radha Krishna should be honoured among such works. One of the important works in early Maithili Literature is the Padavali known as Charyapādas written by the Siddhas in the vihāras in South Maithila in 8-10 cen. A.D. In some of these padās the tenets of Buddhism are described directly in detail in an esoteric language called Sandhyā bhasā. The main topic of these padās is connected with the Sahajayāna.
