Abstract

Railways are significant to the development of Indian economy before World War I. This paper reviews the economic performance of railways in Colonial India. The paper describes the organization and development of the network and the productivity factor for railways before and after Indian independence. The paper highlights two key points – first, the railways influenced the Indian government and gradually the role of government increased with nationalization of railway system in India. Second, the performance and productivity of Indian railways is determined by the technological change, utilization capacity and organizational change that contribute to the economic development of the country. Perhaps, the railways increased the integration of market segment and generated more revenue when compared with other sectors.
