Abstract

The migration process has been one of the most dynamic human activities from the very beginning of human life. These movements are extremely important politically, socially, economically and culturally. The study of migration pattern not only indicates the impact of migration on the growth of population, it also reveals the intensity of mobility and the changes taking place in the direction of movement of population. It is most volatile component of population change and most sensitive to economic, political and cultural factors. This paper deals with the analysis of magnitude and distance covered by migrants. According to the 2001 census, 41.71 million persons out of total population of 96.88 million were enumerated at a place different from the place of last residence and thus termed as migrants. This constitutes 43.05 percent of the total population of the Maharashtra state
