A STUDY ON RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VULNERABILITY AND FOOD BANK SYSTEM DUE TO THE OUTBREAK OF COVID-19 IN NEPAL: A CASE STUDY OF BAGMATI PROVINCE

Abstract

Food is a vital measure of human life to survive, which is the prime requirement when pandemic ensued, Novel Corona Virus (2019-nCOV) commenced in 2019 and increasingly spread out the world. As new set up of Federalism with effect of three tiers of government (Federal, Provincial and Gaun Pallika respectively) on which Paliika played a magnificent role in the local level; nationwide lockdown adversely effect on the impact of food security situation although Gaun Pallika in Nepal. Wage labour, marginal people found more vulnerable due to the lock down. Food bank system is established in few Gaun Pallika and found effective. This study designed to examine the consequences of the food bank system and vulnerability of the people. Two district of Bagmati Province has taken as a study area set with, primary questionnaire survey of 80 HHs has ruined in between a period of 5-12th April 2020. The data revealed that the households food stock remain for 1-2 weeks in most of the surveyed area, lock down stopped the working opportunity, people have no substitute than to depends on irreversible coping strategy and depends on support through Gaun Pallika; marginal community found common habit of eating less preferred food and skipping meals mostly. The short-term food support helped people to manage the extant livelihood situation of the surveyed area. Study concluded as epidemic locked down the entire sector and vulnerability increases, some irreversible coping strategy adopted mainly by Chepang and Dalit are using more, food bank system is unique way and a need a long term strategy is desirable, short term food support helped to manage the livelihood and integrated approach and sustainable programme would be the pre-eminent way out to sustained the livelihood of people.
