RELATIONSHIP OF MOBILE PHONE USAGE AND STUDY HABITS OF SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN BORNO STATE

Abstract

Studies on mobile phone usage show a growing trend of equal manifestations in many countries. Mobile phones can be considered as one of the components of information communication technology (ICT) that provide students with a new form of social communication and information retrieval via internet. This opportunity if utilized will enhance classroom teaching and learning process. The study examined the relationship between student’s Mobile phone usage on study habit. Descriptive survey method was employed in order to arrive at a significant and accurate information. Mobile phone usage survey (MPS) developed by (Bianchi and Phiip,2005) was used to collect data from 200 respondents, likewise Study habits inventory (SHD) adopted version developed by Bakare (1977) was used for the student’s data on study habits. Two hundred (200) respondents were selected randomly for the study in six government schools in Borno state. The mean score, standard deviation, t- test, coefficient of correlation and regression techniques were employed in analyzing the data. The result of the study revealed that, there is a significant difference in the study habits between male and female. Male students have greater levels of study habits in most of the domains, specifically; Concentration, Test preparation and Test taking, reading speed, writing skills and Test anxiety while the students do not differ in their Time Management, Reading Comprehension and Note taking. Likewise, there exist no significant relationship between study habits and students mobile phone usage. The study, observed and recommends that secondary schools management should consider a monitoring unit in the schools to regulate the Students proper Mobile phone usage especially within the school premises as an opportunity that can be used to improve delivery of academic pursuits.
