SKETCHING FEMINISM: REPRESENTATION OF MODERN FEMINIST THEORY IN EL-IOT’S MIDDLEMARCH

Abstract

This paper is an extension of feminism in the social paradigm of Victorian era as modern era quest for balance in, constitutional, theoretical, philosophical and literary discourse of the sub-ject. It examines women’s and men’s role in the social fabric weaved by Eliot in Middlemarch and endeavour to study it in the light of modern feminist theory. Eliot’s portrayal of charac-ters is a counterpart to the aesthetics of feminist theory explored as a foundation of gender equality. Eliot questions the social structure of victorian era and make extrusive demands for both men and women equally. There is no scarcity of feminist discourse in writing and its nei-ther new nor surprising but it is Eliot’s unconventional rendering of her subjects, their desires and ambitions is what makes it worth discussion and consideration. The brilliance of the work also lies in its astute timeline which is from 1829 onwards to the year up to 1832 Reforms Act. The 1832 reform act is important especially for giving women population the right to vote for the first time in England and Wales. Although there are multitude of themes; voca-tion, marriage, idealism, politics, hypocrisy, self interest, religion, education but it all bundles up into a quest of identity. It’s been unreasonably long a time that Feminism has been misin-terpreted to be centralised on women spectrum only, which in itself is against the true essence of Feminism.
