Abstract

This paper attempts to examine the perceived dimensions of stress faced by working women in the Higher Education Institutions (HEI hereafter) in the district of Kamrup Metropolitan in Assam. It will give insight into the factors of stress, if any, and the implications on both the professional spheres as well as the domestic sphere in the lives of the working women. It is well known that working women perform multiple roles, in the domestic sphere balancing her ‘care giving’ and ‘nurturer’ roles as well as an employee, facing various challenges towards achieving their career paths. The importance of this study is that women’s participation in economic activities have increased manifold over the past few decades, and working women in particular face the constant challenge of performing equally well in their personal as well as their professional lives.

A workplace is a location where an individual works for an employer, a place of employment such as an office.
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020: Point 10.3 defines Higher education institution (HEI),as university (or a college). Hence a HEI or university will  mean  a  multidisciplinary  institution  of  higher  learning  that  offers  undergraduate  and graduate programmes, with high quality  teaching, research, and community engagement.
Kamrup Metropolitan district is one of the 33 districts in Assam which was created in 2003, from the undivided Kamrup district. It has a population of 1,253,938 individuals [Census of India, 2011]. The district has a sex ratio of 922 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 88.66%.

Feminists have broadened the definition of work to make it more inclusive and beyond the economic domain; which includes unpaid domestic and caring tasks as gender-specific aspects of women’s work.
A ‘University’ under Section 3 of the UGC Act,1956 means an institution established or incorporated by or under a Central Act, a Provincial act or a State Act, and includes institutions deemed to be universities. This research is limited to private and government/state universities only.
The other types of universities in India are Central Universities, and Deemed to be Universities. However, point 10.14 of the National Education policy 2020 states that the present complex nomenclature of HEIs in the  country such  as  ‘deemed  to  be  university’,  ‘affiliating  university’,  ‘affiliating  technical  university', 'unitary  university’ shall be replaced simply by 'university'. The State universities are established, run and funded by the State government. It confers and grants conducts their own admission and examination procedure, decides their own syllabus, and grant degrees to the students.
