Abstract

The learners need to be exposed to audio materials in an English as a Second Language (ESL) class to enable them to speak elegantly in the English language. But, these audio materials intimidate the learners because they contain Received Pronunciation. Such materials are used because of the teachers’ Neo-colonial ideologies. When the rural learners in Tamil Nadu are exposed to audio materials in Indian English, they will find the ESL class more useful and comfortable. Moreover, the context in the audio material will be familiar to the learners. This will enable them to comprehend the material, and thereby enable faster language acquisition. This paper emphasises the need to use Indian English audio materials in an ESL class to make the teaching-learning process more inclusive.
