Housing being one of the basic needs for every human being is an important component and a measure of socio–economic status of the people. It is regarded as a critical sector in terms of policy initiatives and interventions. The relevance of housing as a social need had been long recognized, and had influenced the innovations and inventions made by the mankind since the Stone Ages. The Government of India was involved in the development and innovations in housing programmes and policies since long. This work is an endeavor to study the policy initiatives undertaken by the Government of India by reviewing the Five Year Plans since independence.
