Abstract
The asrama system began to crumble in the post-Harsha period due to the transformation of gurukulas into mandirs, mathas, state sponsored universities and the introduction of child marriage in case of boys. The lower varna people became attracted towards the sanyasasrama due to the rising influence of heretical sects among them. The new developments weakened the other asramas especially the vanaprasthasrama. A rising trend is seen in the practice of atamotsarg for attainment of salvation but it was restricted by the end of early medieval period.
