The term whistle-blower comes from the whistle a referee uses to indicate an illegal or foul play.US civic activist Ralph Nader coined the phrase in the early 1970s to avoid the negative connotations found in other words such as "informers" and "snitches. A whistleblower is one who blows the whistle on corruption, crime and other misconduct, including unethical conduct. Glazer and Glazer (1989:4) define a whistleblower as one who (a) acts to prevent harm to others, not him or herself, (b) while possessing evidence that would convince a reasonable person.
