The controversy around open source has shifted from whether or not vendors can make money out of it to whether or not, and to what extent, a vendor can market itself as open source. There is no clear answer. It depends on a variety of factors, including the licence the company adopts, its interactions with open source communities, the amount of code it open sources and the amount of revenues it generates from open source. Since the open source movement is less about rigid structures than it is about consensus, what matters in the end is how open source vendors transparently interact with the community at large (and their customers) to settle, or agree to disagree on, their open source status.
