Abstract

Gender diversity on boards has become a global challenge due to the underrepresentation of women on corporate boardrooms across the globe. Measures have been taken by various nations in the form of imposing Quotas or adopting voluntary measures like targets. Norway was the first country to introduce Quota in 2003 to increase the proportion of women on corporate boards. In India Companies Act 2013 which came into effect on April 1, 2014, requires that every listed company or public limited company with a paid up capital of 100 crore or more or a turnover of 300 crore or more to appoint at least one women director by 1 April 2015. The paper covers position women on the corporate boards in India, the Quota and targets and the effect of gender diverse boards on corporate performance.
