Abstract

The concept of prisons has undergone a great change in recent years. The emphasis in the prison is now given on the reformation of prisoners rather than their punishment “The prison is a place of great symbolism and ritual. This ritual begins the moment a prisoner comes through the gate of prison. His clothes are taken from him. He is required to bathe or to shower. He is given a set of uniform clothing. He is given a number, which will become more important than his own name. This symbolism will continue until the moment of his release.” The concept of prisons has undergone a great change in recent years. Prisons are no longer regarded only as places for punishment with the changing perception towards prisoners. They are now being considered as reformatories and greater attention is being given to ameliorate the conditions in jails so that it has a healthy impact on prisoners in developing a positive attitude towards life and society. The state of India’s penal and justice systems speaks volumes about the true nature of human rights and social equality in a country routinely held up by the Western media as the “world’s largest democracy
