Abstract

Literature is a body of creative writing of a nation, people, group or culture. It is an expression of universal ideas through literary forms like poetry and prose. It is a medium to share experiences to the larger audience or public. English literature is body of work written in English language. Woman as subdued gender uses it as a platform to share her experiences, injustice and exploitation; she was subjected to in the male dominated society .Through literature she gives a clarion call to all humanity against the atrocities committed against her in the name of traditions, rituals and conventions. Generally the portrayal of women in English literature was inevitably not balanced. One sided pictures of women are found, either they are depicted as epitome of beauty, virginity or as objects of temptation and seduction.
